Pet Planning Is Not To Be Overlooked

December 15, 2011 by John Kuhn, Estate Planning Attorney

Once you get serious about the process of estate planning there are going to be a lot of things on your mind. Preparing all of the assets that you have been able to accumulate throughout your life for distribution to your loved ones after your passing is certainly a profound task on a number of different levels. On the financial side you must make sure that your assets are optimally positioned for a  smooth and efficient transfer so that nothing is lost as the assets change hands. On an emotional level your legacy represents your final act of giving to those that you love the most, and this can result in the need to make some very important decisions.

With so much to consider there are little things that may slip through the cracks, and some of them may have furry coats and four legs. Yes, your pets must be planned for as well, and it is common for people to overlook this when they are younger because of the fact that they expect to outlive their pets. However, pets can have great value in the lives of seniors on a number of different levels.

The companionship that they provide can assuage loneliness, and this can set in among our elders who have lost a spouse whose children and grandchildren are all grown up and busy in their own right. Pets also provide great entertainment, and they can give you a renewed sense of purpose because they need your care. Plus, they can give you the incentive to get some exercise and some pets will even provide protection.

The first thing you must do when you are engaged in pet planning is to identify a willing and able caretaker. Then you must make sure that your caretaker has the financial resources at his or her disposal to look after the pet for the rest of its life. In the state of South Carolina pet trusts are legal, and this is one option that is available to you. You can also simply leave a direct bequest to your caretaker in your last will.

To learn more about the legal intricacies of pet planning, take a moment to arrange for a consultation with an experienced estate planning attorney.
