How to Know You’re Working with a Good Estate Planning Attorney

December 9, 2011 by Augusta P. Kuhn

Estate planning is an essential tool that everyone should consider implementing at some point.  Not only is it important to have a plan in place, but you also want to make sure that your plan is properly executed.

You can do this by making sure that you only work with a qualified estate planning attorney.  The guide below will help give you a better understanding of how a good estate planning attorney will act.

  • Your attorney should answer all of your questions and address your concerns.  If you feel like an attorney isn’t taking the time to explain something or makes you feel uncomfortable for asking questions, then you’re not working with the right attorney.
  • Your attorney should ask you uncomfortable questions.  Many of the questions related to planning include your personal views on your family, disability, death and finances.  Your attorney needs to get to know you well in order to effectively create a plan that fits your needs.
  • Your attorney should have a personality that works well with yours.  Your plan will be formulated better if you and your attorney are able to communicate well.  Does your attorney make your feel comfortable?  Are you able to talk back and forth with one another in a relaxed tone?  These are all things that you will want to consider.
  • Your attorney should be able to meet all of your estate planning needs.  Most estate planning attorneys handle a wide variety of estate planning cases.  If your attorney is unable to handle a certain aspect of your case, he or she should be able to seek outside help from a network of colleagues in order to make your needs be met.  It’s a good idea to discuss your overall goals up front so your attorney understands how to best help you.

Choosing a qualified estate planning attorney will allow your estate planning goals to be met.  If you have any additional questions about estate planning or choosing the best estate planning attorney, contact our estate planning attorneys today.
